Long Term Planning

Before beginning a new unit in your classroom, careful thought must be put into planning.  The two most important questions the teacher must address are what do I want my student to learn? How will the objective of the lesson be reached?   The following are tasks that must be taken in order to have a well planned and successful unit.
  •     Choose a unit of theme that is age appropriate.
  •     Choose an interesting theme that will keep your students engaged.
  •     What subjects will be covered?  (Cross curricular approach)
  •     Get to know your unit, do extra researching to better familiarize yourself with the topic.
  •     Take students prior knowledge into account.
  •     Ensure that the learning that will be taking place is relevant.
  •     Make sure that the goals you set for your students are attainable and realistic.
  •     Estimate the time frame of the unit.
  •     Connect the QEP competencies to the theme.
  •      What activities will the students take part in and how are they covered?
  •     Identify materials and resources for the lesson.
  •     Ensure that students take responsibility and pride in their work.
  •     How will you evaluate your individual lessons and the unit as a whole?
